The Daily Five

I started introducing The Daily Five in my French Immersion classroom.  I want them to have the chance to practice Reading, Writing and Word Work, as well as have the chance to do guided reading with me every single week.  This program will hopefully allow me to do this.

This past week, we started practicing "Read to Self".  I had never realized that it required a lot of "training" to have all students do proper, productive independent reading!  Here is what we discussed this past week:
  • What is Read to Self? - Three ways we can read to ourselves (Qu'est-ce Lire à soi-même? - Les trois manières de lire à soi-même)
  • What am I doing and what is the teacher doing during Read to Self? (Qu'est-ce que je fais et qu'est-ce que l'enseignante fait pendant "Lire à soi-même?)
  • How to pick a spot (Comment choisir une place)
  • How to sit (Comment s'asseoir)
  • How to pick "good-fit book" (Comment choisir des bons livre - on utilise l`acrostiche: CRICC: C = Choisir un livre, R = ma Raison pour le choisir, I = Intéressant?, C = Compréhension, C = je Connais les mots)
We discussed one of these topics every day and concluded our Daily Five lesson by practicing Read to Self for only 3-4 minutes.  Yes, only 3-4 minutes!  And, if someone got off task before the end of those 3-4 minutes, I stopped everyoen and brought them back to our gathering spot.  We then reviewed our anchor charts and used them as a checklist.  This allowed us to make sure we were "reading to ourselves" properly.

Here are some snapshots of the kids practicing Read to Self!

Here are our anchor charts (there are a couple missing!):

Our next step is Read to Someone (Lire à quelqu'un)!!!  Stay tuned!
